Our parish's tradition of spring break mission trips has flourished since its inception in 2000 when we embarked on our very first journey, taking a small contingent of high school students and chaperones to Tijuana, Mexico. This initiative was aimed at constructing a house for a family in dire need, marking the beginning of what would become a beautiful part of St. Julie's Outreach Ministries. This enduring effort has not only transformed our own community but has also provided 104 families with much-needed shelter. Over the years, we've sent more than 1,700 missionaries to Mexico and remain enthusiastic about continuing this service in the years to come.
The houses we construct are modest yet vital structures, designed to offer sanctuary to families who previously lived in conditions no one should have to endure – in dirt-floor huts with roofs that leak and without the basic dignity of doors or windows, or in mere tents. Each home, an 11’x22’ two-room building complete with a slab floor, stucco-finished exterior, two windows, and a door, stands as a testament to what can be achieved with compassion and teamwork.
All construction is carried out without the aid of power tools, allowing our young missionaries to fully engage with the work. By the end of the week, they will have built an entire house using nothing but their own hands. They will saw each piece of lumber, hammer every nail, and mix each batch of cement manually. We stay at a secure campground in eastern Tijuana, ensuring a safe and productive environment for everyone involved.
This year’s St. Julie’s Parish Mexico Mission Trip is set for April 1 through April 6, 2024.
