Our lectors proclaim the two scripture passages to the congregation at Mass.
To become a lector, make an appointment with the Ministry Chairperson to discuss your qualifications and reasons for wanting to become involved.
Once you are commissioned, your duties will include participating in periodic workshops, setting aside time each week to reflect on and prepare yourself for proclaiming the scripture readings, and making yourself available to serve during a Sunday or a weekday liturgy on a regular basis.
The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy states that the liturgy is the “summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time, it is the fountain from which all her power flows.”
The call to us from Vatican II is full, active participation in the sacred liturgy. Those called to the ministry of lecturing have the awesome privilege of sharing God’s Word by proclaiming scripture and have the responsibility to live the Word in their lives.
The gifts you bring to your role as lector include a highly developed communication skill, and an ability to use your voice to convey the whole range of human emotions.
You need to articulate clearly, use silence and pauses effectively, have excellent voice projection, and make eye contact to connect with members of the assembly.
