Simbang Gabi: A Filipino Christmas Tradition
For centuries, Filipino Catholics have celebrated a special tradition called Simbang Gabi, which means "Mass of the Night." This is a novena—nine days of prayer and preparation for Christmas. Each morning, from December 16 to December 24, the faithful gather before dawn in their parishes for a special Eucharistic celebration.
Pope Francis celebrated Simbang Gabi at St. Peter’s Basilica in December 2019. He explained that the purpose of Simbang Gabi is “to prepare ourselves for Christmas according to the spirit of the Word of God, remaining constant until the Lord’s definitive coming.”
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines describes Simbang Gabi as one of the most meaningful ways Filipino Catholics express their faith. These dawn Masses, also known as Misa de Gallo or Aguinaldo Masses, honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. They are a way for the faithful to show their devotion to Mary as they prepare their hearts for the celebration of Christmas.
This beloved tradition reflects the deep faith of the Filipino people and invites us all to joyfully prepare for the birth of Jesus.
