We would like to share with the family of God here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles a communication received yesterday by Archbishop José H. Gomez from the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, from His Holiness Pope Francis for the victims and those affected by the shooting in Monterey Park. Archbishop Gomez released the following statement in sharing the Pope’s message: “This morning, I received a message from Pope Francis, offering his prayers and condolences for those affected by this weekend’s shooting in Monterey Park. I am grateful and touched by this beautiful expression of our Holy Father’s pastoral concern. “United with our Holy Father and our Blessed Mother, let us continue to pray for those who have died. May God wrap them in his merciful love. Let us continue to pray also for those who were wounded, may God grant them healing. And may God give comfort and consolation to all who are grieving. ####

Father Ian Hagan noted on the weekend of October 8-9 that the church will pay $250,000 for a new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. If that is the price, some ask, why does the Legacy Project cost $3.3 million? The HVAC unit, it turns out, is only one part of a more extensive renovation, which includes the construction of a gathering plaza and play area. The new HVAC unit must be located on the roof, according to city regulations, and the roof must be strengthened to accommodate it. In addition to structural improvements, the HVAC requires installation and new duct work. $250,000 will pay for the unit itself, not for everything that goes with it.

Phase I of the Legacy Project amazed St. Julie’s parishioners in 2012. Gone were the squared-off entryways, the humming light fixtures, and the cranberry carpet. In their place were arched columns, wrought-iron candelabras, and floor tiles with indigo accents. A formerly utilitarian sanctuary now resembled a California mission. Phase II of the Legacy Project will do for the exterior what Phase I did for the interior. A large outdoor gathering place, an area for children, as well as new paint, new stucco, and a new roof, will announce that St. Julie’s is a spiritual home to Newbury Park Catholics. Beauty makes it easier to pray. Renovating the church’s outside will reflect faith on the inside.

Los Robles Health System is proud to host Crush the Crisis Opioid Take Back Day to align with the DEA's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Crush the Crisis events aim to educate our communities on the risk of opioid misuse, while partnering with local law enforcement to provide a safe and anonymous way to dispose of medications that may be left over from previous procedures or other medical visits. Opioid misuse is a national crisis and in many cases, opioid overdoses are the result of individuals accessing and misusing unused prescription opioids from the homes of family and friends.
